One of the secrets to a business continuing to grow and operate profitably is to have a team of professional sales consultants. So, how to have a team of sales staff to bring development and success to a business? Tang Tri Trong, Senior Sales Director At VietnamWorks, share some related experiences.

With 18 years of experience as a senior manager, managing a sales consultant team of more than 100 employees. In your opinion, what qualities make an excellent sales consultant?

At VietnamWorks, each Sales Representative will be trained in service knowledge and sales consulting skills for 2 months before actually interacting with customers and will continue to be mentored for the next 4 months. A learning spirit, observation, willingness to improve and build effective working habits in the first 6 months will be the prerequisites to help them gain momentum and succeed in their new job.

Here are some highlights:

  • Attitude: A good sales representative always maintains a positive attitude at work. The success and happiness of a good sales representative depends 80% on attitude and 20% on ability. This means that if a sales representative A has an ability of 6 points and an attitude of 8 points, then certainly, in just 1-3 years, he will be more successful and happier than a sales representative B with an ability of 8 points and an attitude of only 4 points.
  • Ambition: Good sales representatives always ask the question “Who is the best sales representative in the company and why are they more successful than others?” They will find out this “secret” and are determined to invest effort, time, and money to one day become the best sales representative in the company.
  • Courageous: A good sales representative is someone who knows how to face their fears and overcome them. In the field of sales, the two biggest fears for sales representatives are failure and rejection.
  • Dedicated and enthusiastic: A good sales representative always seeks to bring optimal solutions to customers with their belief in the product and self-confidence.
  • Professional: NVTVBH always see themselves as “problem solvers through providing solutions” and play the role of “advisors, foreseeing problems before they happen”. They are always well-prepared for meetings with customers, aiming to bring added value to customers.
  • Spirit of continuous learning: I really like Einstein's saying: “Learn from yesterday – Live for today – Hope for tomorrow” (Learn from yesterday's mistakes to gain experience and do your best for today, then hope for a better future tomorrow).
  • Sense of responsibility: They take personal responsibility for the company's results and profits, without blaming circumstances.

In your opinion, is it necessary for a sales person to have a degree in economics-related fields? What can help a person succeed in choosing the right job?

I really like a quote by Brian Tracy “All business skills are learnable” (roughly translated, all job-related skills can be learned.) The important thing is:

1. Are you doing the right job that you are passionate about and love?

2. Does the job play to your strengths?

3. Is the job you choose truly meaningful and helps you make useful contributions to yourself and the community?

If you answered “yes” to all three questions above, then you will definitely be successful in the future with the career you choose. The important thing is that you must always persevere and never give up.
